If you ever find yourself in Minnesota, traveling down Highway 61 along the Mississippi River, and roll into Red Wing, well—pull up a chair, and let me tell you all about my visit to the Red Wing Shoe Store. It’s kind of a whole Midwest experience wrapped up in leather and laces.
Now, first off, Red Wing itself? Just a downright charming river town. One of my personal favorite places to visit! Bluffs, brick buildings, that easygoing pace—you know the kind where nobody’s in too much of a hurry unless there’s a fish fry involved. And right there in the middle of it all sits the Red Wing Shoe Store, proud as can be.

When you walk in the store, the smell hits you right away—that rich, broken-in leather scent – solid and familiar. You look around and it’s not just boots on shelves—it’s history. This is where the whole Red Wing Shoes story comes to life.
The establishment combines a museum, retail store, and a factory outlet. It allows visitors to purchase boots while exploring the history of Red Wing Shoes.
The main floor of the Red Wing Shoe Store features the retail store where you can buy current, full-priced boots, and the lower level includes a factory outlet that sells boots at a discount.

Oh boy, the boots! Rows and rows of boots – work boots, heritage styles, ones your grandpa probably swore by, and ones your kid might end up wearing someday. These aren’t the kind you toss after a season—they’re the kind you break in, take care of, and maybe even resole when you’ve worked, walked, and hiked in them for a few miles. Red Wing Shoe Store specializes exclusively in the highest quality boot brands such as Red Wing boots, Irish Setter boots, and Vasque hiking boots. They sell a large assortment of boot oils, creams and cleaners, laces and insoles, gloves and hats, and other genuine leather goods; and they provide boot repair and boot cleaning. Red Wing Shoes Store manufactures many of their leather boots in the USA and are proudly made in the USA. They also use the latest foot scanning technology to take a 360-degree measurement and use that measurement data to match you with the best fitting boots.
The staff? The Red Wing Shoe Store prides themselves in offering the highest level of customer service. Friendly in that genuine, no-pressure way. They’ll help you find your size, talk through what you need, and maybe even share a story or two if you’re up for it. No big sales pitch—just folks who know their stuff.
Upstairs of the Red Wing Shoe Store dive deeper into their legacy with rare artifacts, including WWII-era Sky trooper boots, a virtual factory tour, and an inside look at the making of the legendary #877 boot. You will also find information on how the company began.
In 1905, Charles Beckman founded the family-owned Red Wing Shoe Company in Red Wing, Minnesota. He believed making good boots wasn’t enough—you had to make them the right way. Using the finest leathers, quality materials, and uncompromising craft, he set out to build boots as tough as the people who wore them.
One thing folks always talk about is the giant boot. Yep, you heard that right! In the museum there’s a massive boot—like, comically large—but also really impressive. It’s a size 638 ½ made from 80 hides of leather, and standing over 20 feet tall. The company’s 100 years were celebrated with the Guinness World Record holder for World’s Biggest Boot! You can’t help but snap a picture! It’s just one of those quirky Midwest roadside-type things that makes you grin a little.

Do not miss the Wall of Honor in the museum! Red Wing Shoe Store created the Red Wing Wall of Honor in 2018 to celebrate the profound impact that all trades workers have on our lives. Each year, they proudly share the stories and display the work boots of a select group of inductees at the flagship store. It is a way for Red Wing Shoes to thank them for all they do. I remember as a child my dad buying Red Wing boots for his job – he was an auto worker at the Ford Motor Assembly Plant in St. Paul, MN.

After you visit the Red Wing Shoe Store, don’t rush out of town too quickly! Take a stroll around downtown – grab a coffee, peek into a few local shops, or head down by the river for a bit. That’s kind of the whole point of a trip like this—slowing down and enjoying where you are.

So yeah, if you’re anywhere near southeastern Minnesota, the Red Wing Shoe Store isn’t just worth a stop—it’s worth making a little time for. Grab yourself a good pair of boots, breathe in that leather smell, and soak up a slice of the Midwest that still feels real.
Because in the Midwest, we don’t just buy things—we hang onto them. And that’s kind of what makes places like this special.
